Continuous Monitoring of Fish Population and Behavior by Instantaneous Continental-Shelf-Scale Imaging with Ocean-Waveguide Acoustics

چکیده

The long-term goals of this program are to (1) instantaneously detect, image and spatially chart fish populations over continental-shelf scales, and (2) continuously monitor the areal densities and behavior of these fish populations over time using a novel audible frequency acoustic system (3005000Hz) referred to as Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing (OAWRS). This new method is being applied to explore the abundance, temporal and spatial distributions and behavior of fish populations in the Gulf of Maine on and near Georges Bank, a marine ecosystem being studied in the Census of Marine Life program. OAWRS is a valuable conservation tool for rapid imaging and enumeration of large scale fish populations over thousands of square kilometers to effectively monitor and manage the national fish stock.

Fish population and behavior revealed by instantaneous continental shelf-scale imaging.

Until now, continental shelf environments have been monitored with highly localized line-transect methods from slow-moving research vessels. These methods significantly undersample fish populations in time and space, leaving an incomplete and ambiguous record of abundance and behavior. We show that fish populations in continental shelf environments can be instantaneously imaged over thousands o...

Instantaneous 3D Continental-Shelf Scale Imaging of Oceanic Fish by Multi-Spectral Resonance Sensing Reveals Group Behavior during Spawning Migration

The migration of extensive social groups towards specific spawning grounds in vast and diverse ocean environments is an integral part of the regular spawning process of many oceanic fish species. Oceanic fish in such migrations typically seek locations with environmental parameters that maximize the probability of successful spawning and egg/larval survival. The 3D spatio-temporal dynamics of t...

Effects of multiple scattering, attenuation and dispersion in waveguide sensing of fish.

An ocean acoustic waveguide remote sensing system can instantaneously image and continuously monitor fish populations distributed over continental shelf-scale regions. Here it is shown theoretically that the areal population density of fish groups can be estimated from their incoherently averaged broadband matched filtered scattered intensities measured using a waveguide remote sensing system w...

Office of Naval Research Graduate Traineeship Award in Ocean Acoustics for Ankita

A primary goal of this research is to model biological clutter in the continental shelf environments of the ocean. We aim to do this by modeling scattered returns from fish shoals in continental shelf environments using a full field matched filter approach as well as its single frequency approximation. This will help in characterizing clutter and will help distinguish scattered fields of moving...
